The heatwave has hit hard. In France, where our forever home is located, temperatures are climbing above 40°C (104°F). Night brings no relief; the enclosures stay warm. We're improvising: cold water baths, hosing down the horses at three in the morning, moving animals into the shade, and giving water constantly. The cats have been brought inside, where ventilation keeps them cool during the day. It's Code Red.
Our rooster Dinkie nearly succumbed to the heat. His body temperature spiked, and he went still. We saw it happen and acted immediately: straight into a cold bath. He's recovering now, carefully but steadily. Without that attention at the right moment, it could have ended differently.
This is what round-the-clock care means. We now have to watch day and night, in short shifts, constantly checking and acting fast. The horses get extra water and shade. The chickens and roosters stay in the coolest spots. The cats have their own cool place inside.
