The day begins with the horses, already awake and waiting for breakfast. Then come the chickens, clucking and scratching around the yard. The cats stretch out in the morning sun. And Shihoendra, our blind turkey, follows everyone around as if he can see everything.
Volunteers often say the same thing: here, you learn to listen. Not to words, but to what the animals tell you through their actions. A horse resting its head against you. A cat suddenly jumping into your lap. A chicken following you from barn to barn.
Time seems to pass quickly here. Perhaps because there is no rush, only presence. Just the work that needs to be done, and the animals, grateful in their own way.
