Beauty and Liberté

Two wild mares — terrified of people, their hooves so overgrown that every step was painful. With help from the local community they came to the sanctuary.

They lived in neglect and fear.

Two wild mares — terrified of people, their hooves so overgrown that every step was painful.

They roamed along the roads of rural France, forgotten and unseen. They had an owner, but no one cared for them. No proper food, no veterinary care, no future. Their hooves had grown so long that they could barely walk.

The only solution some people suggested was to shoot them.

We could not look away.

For years, Angelique kept an eye on these horses and did everything she could to prevent that outcome.

Together with members of the local French community, roads were temporarily closed. Step by step, with patience, silence and trust, the mares were guided to safety. To our Sanctuary, Domaine de Soleil.

Today, they have their own pasture and their own woodland, where they can recover in peace and slowly learn to trust.

Their names are now Beauty and Liberté.
